A Billiard's Ball

A Billiard's Ball by Sami D. Moon is an Autumn collection present at Chicago Fashion Week 2024. The collection takes inspiration from the pool table of Moon's Grandfather.

Inspiration

A Billiard's Ball is a collection that drew inspiration from the pool table in my grandfather's den. The table has been in the family since before I was born and provides plenty of entertainment every reunion. I wanted to create an avant garde collection out of the subtle designs of a gentleman's game.

Pool Rug
The velvet carpet provides a soft surface to play pool on. When not in use it is apparently very enjoyable as a cat bed.
Ball Pocket
A leather woven like pocket that are essential to winning the game of pool.
Table Legs
The pool table legs are traditionally carved into claw feet. This particular style is a claw holding a pool ball.
Stain glass lamp
A staple piece to every pool table is the stain glass lamp that hangs over the table. Each lamp has its own design. My grandmother picked this one out.
Diamond marker
The diamond markers on the edge of a pool table dictate specific lines necessary for the game.
Pool chalk
Pool chalk is used on the tip of a pool stick to allow better ball control.

Concept Board

The general concept was to use geometric shapes and designs to create a silhouette similar to the table and its pieces. I relied on the examples above to focus on that vision.

Early Sketches

At the beginning, the sketches were more evening wear. Something you could wear to a gala or event. I think this still comes across with some of the final looks, but somewhere along the way the designs looked more like art. The progression of the designs can be seen below.

The Process

Designer Reveal

The Designer Reveal is a pre-show exhibition to present a look that sets the tone for your entire collection. At the last minute I chose the pool chalk dress. I believe it shows the geometric elements and inspiration clearly.
